According to People, he explained that he had a problem with his ear, “I was born deaf on my right side and I had a birth defect. I had what’s called microtia, which is basically not having an ear. Having a crumpled mass of cartilage.”

In his own book, he also wrote “It was a huge part of my life,” he says. “It was certainly a transitional and pivotal time.
